What ‘s better than sitting outside on a warm August night in Southern California? The answer is doing it while tasting a huge variety of homemade chili recipes or enjoying a delicious grilled burger, strolling through a parking lot filled with classic cars, watching kids in a bounce house and listening to live classic rock music. In other words, attending the third annual Chili Cook-off at Lake Avenue Church on August 22 at 6 pm in the West Parking Lot. Last year’s event drew 350 people from grandchildren to grandparents. This year an even bigger crowd is expected.
The evening kicks off with many of the local car clubs showcasing their classic and antique cars. Next on the night’s agenda is the Chili Contest, where over 20 contestants compete for the coveted first prize trophy. On hand are three famous, yet local judges, including an actual judge, Lance Ito, along with Robin Salzer – owner of Robin’s Woodfire BBQ and Grill and Samson Francois the Executive Chef of the Pasadena University club.
The live music of The International Super Stars of Rock includes a hit parade of oldies but goodies. Speaking of goodies, Lake’s own chef extraordinaire, Leo Hurtado, will be cooking burgers and hot dogs at the grill. As if all this isn’t enough, while as these activities are taking place a bounce house will be well-used by dozens of jumping, laughing kids.
Even if you can’t identify a low-rider from a Lamborghini, or a four-barrel carb from a three-on-the-tree-shifter, you can still enjoy great tasting chili, delicious burgers, fun, laughter and rocking good music.
