Jeff Liou
Jeff spent his first ten years in Cleveland, Oklahoma, a small town where there was no lack for hearing the good news of Jesus Christ. He gave his life to Christ one night during Vacation Bible School at a local church just down the street from his home. The Sunday School lessons and children’s sermons Jeff received from various churches in Cleveland sustained his faith, until he moved to Tulsa and became a part of the Tulsa Chinese Christian Church. The small group of Chinese American youth was lead by a youth pastor who encouraged Jeff to "count the cost" of life with Christ.
Jeff’s college years confronted him with the cost of discipleship. Following Jesus at the University of Michigan required him to abandon the easy answers, get clear on Christian worldview, and take some costly, unpopular stands for the Gospel. While not all of the university community is favorable to Christ, Jeff developed friendships and ministry partnerships with university administrators and faculty. For four years, Jeff worked alongside his friends in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship to live a credible witness on the university campus.
After graduation in 2001, Jeff joined the staff of InterVarsity as the first Asian American staff of the Chinese Christian Fellowship. Together, Jeff, his wife, Lisa and his students explored and developed the gifts that Asian Americans bring to the Church. Their cross-cultural marriage and work with students across the Great Lakes region have made multiethnicity and racial reconciliation important parts of their ministry. Under the training and supervision of gifted and godly mentors, Jeff’s work with students and staff bore joyful, gospel fruit. Few things excite him more than seeing students’ lives transformed by the gospel.
In 2002, Jeff married Lisa. Lisa has been on staff with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship for seven years. In 2006, they welcomed their daughter, and in 2009, their son. Jeff and Lisa are also pursuing doctoral and master’s degrees, respectively, in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary.

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9

Nothing makes this college pastor happier than seeing students on a mission to live faithfully in their schools and workplaces. I don't think anyone is born with this kind of know how. Instead, we all go through a learning process. This week, a reflection on this learning process is brought to you by one of our very own local students. We've chosen to keep him anonymous so he can maximize his impact in sensitive places. Join me in praying for light to shine through our college students.

"Pasadena is a city that is hurting, and Lake Avenue church is in the center of that hurt. For us to not be completely inviting, and pushing for the Pasadena community to BE the Lake Ave community, then we are being blatantly blind."
Once again, it's my privilege to work alongside college students who intentionally choose life experiences that will bring them closer to the Way of Jesus. Our very own Rafik Wahbi went to the Christian Community Development Association national conference (with Eliza from last week's post and Mayra Nolan, too). These are some of his reflections.

“’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ And the second [commandment] is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:29-31
)
“God commands us to love Him supremely and others sacrificially, and to live out our faith with care for one another, compassion toward the poor, and justice for the oppressed.” (LAC Statement of Faith)
As college pastor, I'm so pleased to know thoughtful college students who grew up here and are doing great things for Jesus. Eliza Haney (UC Davis, '12) recently attended the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) national conference along with Mayra Nolan (LACF Community Outreach Director), who sits on the board of CCDA. These are some of Eliza's reflections...

Hello church family!
I thought I'd post this video below that includes one of our own, Kelly Joiner, on staff with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at UCLA (you'll see her at 2:12).

Just a quick personal note from a young dad...
"Do you trust me?"
Every time I prepare to teach or preach at LAC or on a college campus, I hear this voice in my head, asking me if I really trust God and his Word. If you've ever doubted, this post is for you.

Through our college ministries, LAC recently co-sponsored the Veritas forum at Caltech. We invite your ongoing prayers for faithful and vibrant witness to the Caltech community and to all the campuses within LAC's reach.
To get an idea of how the event went, here's an edited report from one of our ministry partners:
