Junior High - Pastor Annie McLaren
I grew up with a father who told and retold the adventures of our family with a certain flair, making us remember the stories our past with nostalgia and excitement. His telling and retelling of these stories changed them from "things that happened to our family" to "Momentous occasions in the epic story of the McLaren family."
No Pranking Allowed!
We explicitly tell our students at camp that they are absolutely under no circumstances allowed to engage in pranking behaviors. They are not allowed to raid each other’s cabins, put shaving cream all over someone’s face when they go to sleep, draw a mustache on someone’s face during the night… you know the drill. We explicitly say that kids will be sent home if they engage in these behaviors.
The Body of Christ
For the last several years I have had the amazing privilege to be part of a Bible Study that looks at God’s Word and discusses what it means in our lives. My view of Scripture and of God has been indelibly shaped through this group. We have dinner together each week and talk about how these ancient texts actually have power to change our lives.
A Celebration of Baptism.
I had the amazing privilege of baptizing 8 Junior High students this past weekend in a church wide intergenerational Baptism Celebration. This was an incredibly heart warming event, with people being baptized from all walks of life. There were grandmothers professing their faith in the God who has walked with them through very difficult life experiences, and there were first graders just beginning to understand what it means to live a life of faith. There were kids who had just recently moved to the United States from China, and there were adults who had lived in Pasadena their entire lives. Different ages, different ethnicities, different life experiences… The common thread? A desire to proclaim their relationship with God to the people around them. As one of my 8th grade girls said, they wanted to express “on the outside” what was true “on the inside.”
