Dear Parents,
Welcome to Lake Avenue Church School. Our staff of highly qualified, dedicated, loving, teachers and personnel, are eager to serve you and your family during these formative and enjoyable early childhood years.
Our purpose is to provide quality Christian care for children in a safe, happy, healthy, and intellectually stimulating environment. All are welcome regardless of race, color or creed.
We believe that each child follows predictable stages of growth and development, and progresses through these stages at their own rate and in their own unique way. Each child is God's unique creation and therefore has their own individual strengths and needs. We try to build on these strengths and meet these unique needs by providing a wide variety of both teacher directed and child creative movement and Bible study.
How a child learns is determined by the teacher's teaching methods. The word "teach" may imply the process; in which information is delivered but teaching does not only entail lectures or verbal instruction to a child.
It also involves facilitating and guiding the child into meaningful learning. The teacher's task is to observe the students, to ensure that they understand the activity and to pose additional challenges that will reinforce what the child has learned. Therefore, our teachers prepare daily for an environment that will make learning a possibility.
Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. - Proverbs 22:6
It is possible to drill the children until they can correctly recite pieces of information, such as the alphabet or numbers 1-20 . However, the child's response to these information may facilitate wrote learning, something which does not promote meaningful learning. For children to understand fully and remember what they have learned, it is important that they are able to understand what they are learning. Here at Lake Avenue Church School, we will make sure that your child does not only have their alphabets and numbers memorized, rather, we will teach them why they should know their alphabets and numbers. We can facilitate such learning through integrating these to the child's various experiences in class.
Meaningful learning is essential for stimulating and motivating your children. If learning is made relevant for your child, he will grow up understanding the concepts and integrating them into real life situations, thereby motivating them to learn more.
Our goal as teachers then is to motivate rather than to drill. So that children learn to think independently and creatively, rather than merely to memorize. I have no doubt that with the hard work of our teaching staff and your support, we can make this possible.
