LAC Families-

Memories!! Now depending on your age and musical knowledge, the word memories will evoke a certain song in your head. You will either think about Memories by Maroon 5 or The Way We Were by Barbara Streisand. If you don’t think about either of those songs it’s probably a good thing. Both songs remember pain and joy as a part of life. There are other songs that do the same but they were the first ones to come to my mind when thinking about this. Between chore charts, homework, sports schedules, music lessons, screen time, work and sleep it can be really difficult to create quality time with our kids. It is why you have to be intentional about creating memories. One of the things that my wife and I have believed in our parenting is that anything done over time will have significant impact in the lives of children, repetition is a form of emphasis. It is especially true of faith, tradition and fun. Creating great memories for you and your kid(s) is a way to increase trust, encourage communication and strengthen closeness and family bonds. Every family can do this no matter who you are or what your resources are.

Between birth and High School graduation there are about 940 weeks in your kid’s life. There are so many small and large moments that you can create in those weeks. But just like anything, you have to prepare for it, you have to be intentional. As with many things, you have to start where you are. You have to start now, no matter how old your kids are. Here are some questions that may be helpful:

  • What moments can you create on a weekly basis?
  • What adventure do you want to experience with your kids?
  • What skill can you learn together?
  • What would make you sad if you weren’t able to do it with your kids?
  • Given everything that has happened in the past year and a half, what feels really important to do this coming year?

If you’re having trouble thinking of what to do, here are a couple of websites that can give you more practical things to do.
