LAC Families -

I want to be mediocre!! That is a phrase that I don’t hear many parents say. That is not a sentiment that parents have. As one of my friends likes to say, “Every parent wants to be a better parent.” That means you and I have to practice greatness. As parents, I believe that means 3 things.

The first is that greatness in the Kingdom begins and ends with humility. I have yet to meet the parent who knows it all. I know a few ‘know it all’ parents but few who actually do. We need to parent with the character of humility. It originates from the parent’s awareness of their source of strength and use of gifts. When you parent with humility it frees you from idolatry of self-centeredness, trap of comparison, and despair of failure.

Second, is that greatness is marked by effectiveness. It is never the effectiveness of creating a child in your image. You have to parent the child you have not the one you wish you had. Effectiveness is concerned with creating an environment in your home where trust, communication, and closeness are known, experienced, and practiced.

The third quality of parental greatness is service. It is not just about working to support your family, helping with homework and driving your kids everywhere. It is an attitude that frees kids to make choices on their own about their faith, relationships, values, future, and identity. Service is about helping your kid become who God is shaping them to be.

Now is a perfect time to practice greatness. Whether you have a newborn or a teen going to college, it is never too late to become a great parent.

Blessings,
